Prague’s top 12 weekend events: Indonesian eats, design dreams, and neighbor meets

Celebrate Jakarta’s culinary traditions at the Betawi Menu Week, hosted by the Indonesian Embassy and SIA Restaurant Prague. Savor authentic dishes such as Asinan Betawi, Nasi Uduk, and Soto Betawi, curated by celebrity Chef Marinka and expertly prepared by the restaurant’s top chefs from Oct. 5-12. Stop by the Indonesian Market at Kulatak Farmer’s Market on Saturday for even more traditional grub, plus fashion, dancers, and musical performances.

Experience the lively culture of the Philippines at Pinoy Fest 2024, held at Tresor Club in Vinohrady. Acclaimed Filipino performer Bryan Gandola will perform, and traditional food and cultural performances will bring Czech and Filipino communities together. The event runs from 7 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Rescheduled due to heavy rain in late September, the Experience Americká Differently festival will unfold this Saturday, spilling onto Americká street in Vinohrady. Explore the vibrant spirit of America at this unique event, offering food, art, and music inspired by various regions of the United States.

SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT

All things eco-friendly will be taking up the central square in Metropolis Zličín from Oct. 1 to 31 for the Festival of Sustainability this month. Learn about the future of food, including fermentation and even insect cooking, plus greentech and how to effectively reduce waste. Workshops will be held every Saturday and Sunday throughout October, with this week’s topic being how to grow hydroponics at home.

Meat lovers, vegans, coeliacs, and foodies of all persuasions will find something to tickle their taste buds at Prague’s Biojarmark on Oct. 5 – a market specifically focused on organic food. The National Agricultural Museum has a rich program prepared, with eco-farmers from all over the country offering their produce and insight. Take home delicious shiitake mushrooms, lovingly made granola, dairy products and preserves, hemp teas, and more.

CULINARY DEEP-DIVE

The foodie favorite, Restaurant Week, is supporting the culinary scene in Prague this weekend by bringing you high quality meals across different venues in the city for an affordable ticket price. Restaurants both new and established, such as Amano, Alcron, Cruz Rotisseria, Dim Sum Spot, and dozens more, will be offering three-course meals with a Restaurant Week voucher, which runs from Oct. 2 to 27.

The beloved Strahov Brewery is hosting their annual October Beer & Food Fest this Saturday, bringing a wide range of craft beers and gourmet street food to you. Try their special brew of Oktoberfest Bock and pair it with the Bavarian style menu, all accompanied by live music and good spirits. No entrance fee is required.

ARTFUL PIONEERS

Designblok, the biggest design and fashion festival in Czechia, opened in Prague yesterday and will run until Oct. 6, with “Youth” as the main theme of this year’s 26th edition. The event will take place in several venues, and over 200 artists, studios, and brands will take part in the annual event.

The Karel Zeman Museum, dedicated to the creations of the celebrated ‘film magician’, is celebrating its 12th birthday this year, and along with the Museum Without Barriers Festival, this weekend will be a big one for the culturally respected museum. Completely free guided tours of the museum along with filmmaking workshops will run throughout the day on Oct. 5, and evening music will play in Malostranská beseda.

NEIGHBORHOOD MERRIMENT

Eight inner blocks in different parts of Prague will transform into neighborhood flea markets on Saturday and Sunday this weekend for the Living Courtyards event. Discover secondhand treasures and find gold in someone else’s junk amidst a wide selection of clothes, accessories, household items, books, games, children’s toys, and more. Local businesses and cafes will be selling refreshments, and mingling with fellow market-goers is encouraged!

The Be2Can Festival is presenting a selection of critically acclaimed films from the Cannes, Berlinale, and Venice festivals. Running until Oct. 9, the event offers a curated lineup of 12 exceptional international films at Edison Filmhub and Kino Lucerna.

POIGNANT EXHIBITS

Explore the evocative world of Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková at an in-depth retrospective held at the National Gallery until March 30, 2025. Known for capturing raw, intimate moments of nightlife in Prague in the 1970s, and the experiences of Roma, Vietnamese and Cuban minorities in the 1980s, Jarcovjáková’s work spans decades, offering a poignant look at human vulnerability and resilience.

The Indomitable Power exhibition at the Ukrainian Centre in Nusle showcases military artifacts from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Featuring items such as uniforms, personal belongings, and battlefield remnants, the display provides a moving insight into the realities of war and the experiences of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians. It will be open until Oct. 5 and voluntary admission will go to help Ukrainian soldiers.
